Since their debut in 2022, four-piece K-pop group H1-KEY has developed a reputation for their uplifting music. SEOI, leader of the quartet, shared that conveying “empathy” was the focus of their music. She continued, “Currently, H1-KEY is on a journey to discover our unique musical colors, exploring a range of genres rather than confining ourselves to one. Our plan is to keep releasing songs of diverse genres and colors.” Touching upon the group’s aspirations, YEL said, “We aim to be singers who bring comfort and solace to our listeners. By continuing to sing songs that provide solace, we hope to inspire and comfort not only our fans but all who listen to our music.”
In January 2024, the group decided against making the conventional comeback and instead launched a new music project titled H1-KEYnote. “We opted for this project to showcase our vocal prowess,” began SEOI. “Exploring new genres and uncharted territories, the project mirrors our artistic vision while allowing us to grow alongside it.”
The first song of the project was “Thinkin’ About You,” a warm pop ballad full of yearning. On selecting this song to launch the project, HWISEO said, “It’s not only our first English track but also our first song about love and breakup. Given its significance as a first in multiple aspects, we felt it was the perfect choice to kick off the project.” Diving into the process behind recording the song, SEOI shared, “We focused extensively on highlighting our vocal abilities, making it an ideal introduction to this project. The lyrics talk about how the narrator misses one’s past lover and overcoming difficulties with a positive mindset, showcasing our distinctive musical style.”
In February, the group released the second installment of the H1-KEYnote project, “Deeper.” Of the project’s two songs, SEOI mentioned that she personally connects with “Deeper” more. “Not only does this song embody our group’s core themes of empathy and solace, but it also speaks about the strength and determination to persevere through pain and sorrow,” said SEOI. “Listening to ‘Deeper’ motivates me to work harder while offering a comforting sense of reassurance.” Honing in on a memorable line from the song, HWISEO felt the song’s opening words, “I wondered if this was right,” struck a chord with her: “I resonate with this line as it reflects my willingness to move forward despite having doubts.”
While this is the second song of the project, it’s one the group revealed to have kept in their back pocket for a while. “The song was from the producer Hong Ji Sang after we worked on ‘Rose Blossom’ together,” said RIINA. “The recording sessions for ‘Deeper’ went through numerous revisions, and we put in a lot of effort to capture the song’s emotions effectively.
As the group explores different music styles and vocal expressions through the project, H1-KEY hopes that listeners will gain strength from their music. “Maintain an optimistic approach during tough times rather than being negative about it,” started HWISEO. “By focusing on small moments of joy in your daily life, you can gradually enhance your overall happiness even if it’s just a little bit each day.”
