Fresh off the success of the Hot Topic EP released earlier this year and its lead single, “Iconic,” Japanese metal band hanabie. embarked on their first major full-length North American headlining tour. On March 24, the band turned Atlanta’s typically quiet and affluent Buckhead neighborhood into a gritty, edgy backdrop for a night of thrashing and moshing. Bringing their signature kawaiicore sound and aesthetics to the Buckhead Theatre, hanabie. drew an eclectic and diverse crowd – a striking mix of hardcore metalheads and Harajuku fashion stans.
At an average height of five feet, the members remind attendees that big things can come in small packages. The night kicked off with “NEET GAME,” a bold choice for an opener with its call-and-response chorus that demanded immediate audience participation. “Sunrise Miso Soup” followed, and the venue erupted into a headbanging frenzy with the band and the crowd locked in perfect rhythm. The highlight of the night occurred during “TOUSOU,” a fan favorite for its extreme aggression and one of the band’s most anticipated live performances, which ignited the most intense mosh pit of the show.

In between tracks, the members found ways to connect with the audience despite their limited knowledge of English. Bassist Hettsu drew a ton of support after she openly “stole” guitarist Matsuri’s beer. And singer Yukina delighted the crowd when she commended the venue for creating a themed drink inspired by their hit song, “Spicy Queen.” However, her innocent complaint that it had too much alcohol was met with cheers and laughter from the smitten audience. The show closed with “Today’s Good Day & So Epic,” a song that features Matsuri’s enthusiastic and expressive vocals that gently softened the blow of the evening coming to its end.
Hanabie. first formed in 2015 as a high school cover band before evolving into one of Japan’s top hardcore metal exports. Since the addition of drummer Chika in 2023, hanabie. has had a string of successes including signing with Sony in 2023, winning the Best Alternative Metal Band at the 2024 Metal Awards and becoming the first all-female Japanese band to perform on the main stage at Lollapalooza. If their Buckhead takeover is any indication of things to come, hanabie. will continue to build their rapidly growing and rabidly devoted following – one mosh pit at a time.
